THE PROSPECTIVE TEACHER Method of Grading Student Learning

Grading, then is the process of assessing students and giving them a number (or letter) grade indicating their performance. One of the things that is common in schools, at least mine when I was a kid as well to this day, are assessments.

Purpose of Grading

Source of motivation: tools to aspire and achieve a better grade.

Accountability: They hold students accountable for learning and teachers responsible for teaching.

Feedback – Grades are a feedback to students on what they do well and where improvements can be made.

Selections and Placement: There exist a lot of things where grades are used like in the college admitee, job placements etc.

Types of Grading Systems

Grading systems in Different educational institutions —

Grading: Giving a number out of 100

Letter Grading: Providing letter grades ( A, B, C,D and F).

How does the grading system work in MDS program at UBC? Pass/Fail Grading:- Students are either pass, or they fail.

The pass/fail binary which is a list of only whether you failed the test, or passed it; A more specific check system, such as with +’s and -‘s to denote how well YOU did on that exam.

The Problems and Troubles concerning Grading

Grading is widely used but has its own limitations and disadvantages −

Some of this is preconceived by us, and some of it rubbish grades focusing on another memory aspect rote learning as opposed to thinking creatively.

Global University Grades Tension: The need to get the maximum score puts stress and anxiety in pupils.

Inequity — grading is based on biased and subjective which leading to unfairness.

Little Feedback: Many times grades do not offer feedback on where the student went wrong.

Another assessment options

Educators are exploring alternative ways of assessing student learning, in the ongoing quest to move beyond traditional grading.

Performance-Based Assessments: In a performance-based assessment, a student is evaluated on the basis of completing real-life tasks and projects.

Portfolio Assessment (Includes Link): assesses student work throughout period of time, shows progress and growth.

Peer and Self-Assessment: Get students to assess their own work as well as the work of other contributing members in your group.

Formative Assessment: Frequent feedback to students with the goal of improving student learning.
